CJC-1295 in the UK: the regulatory status

CJC-1295 holds no UK marketing authorisation and counts as an unlicensed medicine, so here is what the law says and what actually changed this year.

CJC-1295 is not a licensed medicine in the United Kingdom, and it never has been. The Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA), the body that licenses medicines for sale in Britain, holds no marketing authorisation for CJC-1295 for any indication, in any form. That places it where most research peptides sit: it is an unlicensed medicinal product, and selling or supplying one for human use is an offence under the Human Medicines Regulations 2012[2]. The human evidence base is two small early-phase studies from the mid-2000s, one of which reported a plasma half-life of 5.8 to 8.1 days[1] and never led to a Phase 3 programme.

The status did not change: it is still unlicensed

If you searched for what changed about CJC-1295 in the UK this year, the honest answer is that nothing changed about the drug's legal standing. It was unlicensed a year ago and it is unlicensed now. No sponsor has applied for a UK marketing authorisation, and the ConjuChem clinical programme that produced the original human data stopped after early-phase work in the mid-2000s and was never restarted. Any page implying a recent regulatory reclassification of CJC-1295, an approval, a scheduling move, or a new licensed route, is describing something that did not happen.

What did shift over the past year is the enforcement climate around unlicensed injectable peptides sold online. That is a real change, and it is the part of this story worth reading closely. It just does not touch the licensing status of CJC-1295 itself, which is exactly where it was.

Why no licence exists

A medicine earns a UK licence by clearing a full evidence package on quality, safety, and efficacy. CJC-1295 has never come close. The strongest human data is still the 2006 study by Teichman and colleagues, which gave ascending single and repeated doses to healthy adults and measured the growth-hormone response. It reported mean plasma growth hormone raised 2 to 10 fold for six days or more, IGF-1 raised 1.5 to 3 fold for nine to eleven days, and no serious adverse reactions, describing the compound as safe and relatively well tolerated at doses of 30 to 60 micrograms per kilogram[1].

That is a pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic sketch in a small healthy cohort, not a therapeutic evidence base. There is no completed Phase 2 efficacy trial in any condition, no long-term safety dataset, and no data in older adults, pregnancy, or anyone with the conditions people actually reach for growth-hormone-axis peptides to treat. A regulator has nothing to license, because no sponsor has ever assembled the dossier that a marketing authorisation requires. The absence of a UK licence is not an oversight the grey market can route around. It reflects the fact that the drug was never developed to the point where approval was possible.

What UK law actually says

Under regulation 46 of the Human Medicines Regulations 2012, a person may not sell or supply, or offer to sell or supply, a medicinal product that has no marketing authorisation or equivalent registration in force[2]. CJC-1295 raises growth hormone and IGF-1 by acting on the pituitary gland, so a product sold to produce that effect in a person meets the definition of a medicine by function. Without an authorisation, it falls on the wrong side of regulation 46.

There is one routine way unlicensed medicines reach UK patients lawfully, and it is worth ruling out so nobody assumes it applies here. An unlicensed medicine, known as a "special", may be specially manufactured or imported to meet the needs of an individual patient, but only when ordered by an authorised prescriber such as a doctor, and only supplied by a licensed manufacturer, importer, or registered pharmacy[3]. That is a controlled clinical exception with a named patient and a prescriber taking responsibility for quality and safety. It is not a shop counter, and it is not what an online vendor listing "CJC-1295 for research use only" is offering. The research-use label does not legalise human use and does not put the vial through any pharmaceutical quality control.

What changed in the past year: enforcement, not status

The MHRA has spent 2025 and 2026 visibly tightening its grip on the grey market for injectable medicines. On 28 May 2026 its Criminal Enforcement Unit carried out what it called its largest ever seizure of unlicensed weight-loss medicines, recovering around 12,000 doses along with peptide products, packaging, and pharmaceutical substances used in illicit manufacture, and arresting two people[4]. The agency's line was blunt: medicines regulation is not discretionary, and it exists to protect people.

Read that carefully before applying it to CJC-1295. The seizures target the supply channel, the warehouses, websites, and unlicensed manufacturers moving injectable peptides to UK buyers, rather than CJC-1295 specifically. The headline products are weight-loss agents like tirzepatide and retatrutide, not GHRH analogues. But CJC-1295 travels through the same online research-chemical channel that the MHRA is now dismantling, so the enforcement risk to anyone selling it into the UK has gone up even though its licensing status has not moved. The change is in how hard the rules are being enforced, not in what the rules say about this peptide.

The two-molecule problem a UK buyer runs into

There is a further wrinkle specific to CJC-1295 that shapes what a UK reader is actually looking at. The name refers to two different molecules. The version ConjuChem designed and tested, CJC-1295 with DAC, carries a linker that binds it to blood albumin and stretches its half-life to roughly a week[1]. The version most online vendors sell as "CJC-1295" is usually the form without that linker, identical to MOD-GRF(1-29), whose half-life is closer to half an hour. The two share a marketing name but not their pharmacology. Neither holds a UK licence, so the legal answer is the same for both, but a buyer chasing the multi-day profile from the original studies is in most cases not buying that molecule at all.

Athletes: the anti-doping line is separate and firm

For anyone competing under the World Anti-Doping Agency code, the licensing question is beside the point. The administration of growth hormone releasing hormone and its synthetic analogues is prohibited by WADA[5], and CJC-1295 is a GHRH analogue, so it sits inside section S2 of the Prohibited List, banned in and out of competition. UK Anti-Doping enforces the same list against British athletes exactly as written. Detection has historically lagged because these peptides appear at very low concentrations in urine, but validated testing methods now exist, so a clean-looking history is not the same as an undetectable one.
